Family recreate The Simpsons intro during lockdownApril 19, 2020
Lockdown, albeit occasionally nice and relaxing, can also be incredibly boring. One family, who have been stuck indoors for nearly a month, decided to take this opportunity to get creative. As his wife was cleaning out the Halloween costumes in the basement, Joel Sutherland had a lightbulb moment – why not use these to recreate a beloved animated sitcom (and entertain the kids at the same time)? So, that’s exactly what he did. The family recreated the intro for The Simpsons, which Joel then promptly shared on Twitter where it has since gone viral. ‘Social Isolation, Day 23, his tweet reads. ‘Kids: We’re booooored! What can we do? Wife *cleaning basement*: What are we ever going to do with these Simpsons Halloween costumes we only wore once? Me:’
Every aspect from the sitcom’s intro is there – though some props aren’t quite what you’d expect (the nuclear stick that Homer throws from his car has been replaced with a hot dog, for instance). In a few follow-up tweets, Joel, who works as a librarian, wrote: ‘I’m glad everyone is enjoying my family’s self isolation project! ‘Most shots were one-take wonders. I hope you’re all happy, healthy and safe. ‘Don’t forget to support your local bookstore.’ People are loving the hilarious stunt, with the tweet having racked up over 28,000 likes so far. ‘I hope The Simpsons use this as an intro to an actual episode one day,’ one person tweeted. ‘Next do all the episodes!,’ requested someone else. (We wholeheartedly support this).
